Interview with UNRAVEL

by Vpower

The Band: Unravel
Country: Australia

Crawling from the gutters of Perth, Western Australia in 2014, UNRAVEL’s Old School Death Metal, Grindcore and Hardcore Punk are here his first sonic agression full length "Eras Of Forfeit", mixed by Taylor Young at The Pit Recording Studios (Nails, Xibalba, Twitching Tongues etc) and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Poison Idea, Gehenna, High On Fire etc) and with quite long experiencie in the arenas, for being formed in 2015.

Hello guys, "Eras Of Forfeit” is your debut album, how do you feel about it?

We feel pretty stoked and proud with how it all came out finished from the songs themselves to the artwork and packaging.

For almost a brand new band this Eras Of Forfeit is a great good surprise, a big debut to put it simple, isn’t it?

Thank you very much! Yeah the response has been pretty great to do it so far and it makes all the effort we put into the album that all more worthwhile.

How long have you worked in the album and how was the recording process?

Many of the songs on the album had been in the works since we started writing for our split 7” with Ashmouth so I believe we started writing for it around mid 2016 and finished mid 2017. The album was recorded by our good friend Cam Murphy of Opaque Audio between his studio and our rehearsal studio in 10 days in June/ July 2017.

The work on drums by Ben is really fantastic, a key in your sound I would say

Ben listens and draws a lot of influences from various different extreme music genres so we think that definitely reflects on his drum work.

What takes us to the next question. Who is more responsible for the composition of the songs?

Composition wise it usually starts off with someone bringing in a drum idea or riff to the table and building off that (Some ideas turn out to be complete songs and some other ideas are completed deconstructed into something else entirely)

The amazing artwork by renowned artist Dan Seagrave is just another hint of the quality behind your first album

Dan did an absolutely fantastic job on the artwork and we couldn’t have pictured a more perfect cover for our album.

Any favorite songs in the album?

If we had to choose we’d say Scorched and Carcinogenesis.

With a length a little over 20 minutes this Eras Of Forfeit is like the concentrated vitamin for every band of the death/grindcore/hardcore, no time to loose

We think the reason the album sounds like that is because we all listen to and are influenced by to those various genres of extreme metal so it reflects on what our own music will sound like. As far as the length goes we feel it’s due to our punk and hardcore backgrounds where song structure is disregarded in favour for songs that get straight to the point and don’t mess around most of the time.

For some people however, they may think that songs of 2 minutes or less are not so worthy or with added value, what would you say to those guys?

We can appreciate how those guys would feel that way as 2 minutes or less songs often try to accomplish many things in a short amount of time and that’s fine, the songs’ intentions are supposed to give off an intense, vicious and downright hasty feel so we can appreciate how that cannot accomodate for everybody’s music tastes.

What have been the bands of reference in your sound?

Our influences include Slayer, Carcass, Terrorizer, Discharge, Entombed, Celtic Frost, Integrity, Sepultura, Anti-Cimex, Venom, Carnage, Ringworm,Grave, Death, Cro-Mags, Morbid Angel, Dismember, D.R.I., Unleashed, Mindsnare, Främtid, Napalm Death, Amebix, Master, Cryptic Slaughter, Earth Crisis, Rotten Sound, Bathory, Demigod, Bolt Thrower, Turmoil, Benediction, At The Gates, Chokehold, Autopsy, Merauder, Exhumed, Nasum, Entrails, Arkangel, Deicide, Left For Dead and many more.

A long and detailed list with many interesting names on it, yeah. You are from Australia, in terms of listening there is no problem nowadays with the Internet, but the gigs are another question. Is there a big scene for this kind of music in your country or you don’t dismiss the idea to move to other place in the future?

Australia has one of the most best scenes in the world and more than often nurturing of our type of music. We have opened and even toured with many international bands who have visited our shores so we feel there’s really no need to move to another country, especially one with more bands and more competitiveness that unfortunately comes with it.

Related to the last question, I have read that you have shared stage with American legend Kublai Khan, one of my favorite bands, so I cannot avoid to ask the next question: how is playing alongside so big guys like that?

It was a great and fun show from memory and we’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to play a show like that and will forever be incredibly grateful to be put onto shows like that in the future.

Do you expect or would like to “be a Kublai Khan” some time in the future or you don’t think about that?

We just like writing music and playing shows so it’s not something we think about to be honest. If it happens we’ll be stoked of course but if not, it won’t stop us from doing what we already do.

Good point! Thank you very much for your attention, if you wish to add something…

Thank you very much for the questions! You can pick up our new album
